Sixteen-year-old Tommy Connor is a problem his parents can no longer solve. Desperate for a clean slate, they sign him over to Sierra N.M.T.C., a fortress-like rehabilitation facility in the scorched deserts of a fractured West America. But Sierra isn’t a hospital—it’s a cage run more by algorithms than it is people. Upon arrival, Tommy is implanted with a bio-monitor, a neural chip that punishes anger with sedation and rewards compliance with synthetic dopamine.

To survive, Tommy masters the art of dissociation, fooling the sensors to climb the facility’s ranks from the misery of Level One to the luxury of Level Five. But as he rises, the facility’s perfect reality begins to crack. He spots glitches in the simulations and realizes his memories are being rewritten. Trapped in a high-tech prison that demands he surrender his mind to be "cured," Tommy must decide if he’s willing to burn down the perfect lie to find the ugly truth.
