Book Review - Glory and Empire

A page-turning space charmer.

Brian Jeffreys propels us into hyperdrive in the concluding installment of the Captain Traci Ganner chronicles, Glory and Empire — weaving an intricate and superbly crafted odyssey that quite literally transcends time and space. The journey takes many twists and turns— giving a “MasterClass” in world building as various cultures, timelines, and explorations across the universe are depicted in a tight 419 page read that both fantasy and sci-fi readers will love.

Whether we’re rushing through the heavens on the Corsair, racing through caves, tunnels, and castles on frigid planets, or exploring the deep inner struggles and sleepless nights of Captain Ganner, we’re seamlessly propelled across time-traveling rifts and space jumping portals in a well-balanced story filled with drama, intrigue, comic relief, and action from end to end.

Through the lenses of Ms. Ganner, the seasoned Space Marshal Scott Pearson, First Officer Michael Mackenzie, Councilor Agron, and the reclusive but well intentioned Admiral Salabast, we see a production of epic proportions unfolding page by page as the evil and relentless pursuit of General Geron drives the story forward. The nuanced and well-conceived Captain Kendahl adds a nice touch to the story as well.

Jeffreys sprinkles a myriad of subtle nods and scenes reminiscent to classic sci-fi television and film giving a medley of gorgeous visual descriptions and nicely paced and story advancing dialogue from beginning to end.

All in all, I found this an enjoyable read, regularly escaping into this otherworldly experience. I look forward to future efforts from Mr. Jeffreys.

Book Synopsis:

The Terran Empire is in a state of chaos after the successful sack by the Valdi armada. As the Terran fleets struggle to reorganize, First Marshal Scott Pearson led the charge to cut into the enemy flank and stem the tide of reinforcements. With Orion help, he was succeeding, until Captain Traci Ganner interferred--again. But Traci must bring the Terran marshal and the chief Orion councilor together to confront a Terran threat from the future. Facing daunting new technology, Traci finds herself in the clutches of a new Terran enemy and if they force the location of the rift from her, both the Terrans and Orions will be lost. The final book of the Traci Ganner trilogy puts Traci and her officers through their most difficult trials yet and leads Traci to a mystical temple that holds the keys to her very survival.
